Senate President Atwater to jump into CFO race

From the Orlando Sentinel Blog:

TALLAHASSEE -- Sources close to Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, confirmed he will be announcing his bid for state chief financial officer on Tuesday -- a day after Republican Bill McCollum announces his gubernatorial bid.

"We're letting Mr. McCollum get out of the gate first," one source said.

Atwater will be on hand Monday in Orlando when McCollum makes his news. The location for Atwater's CFO announcement hasn't been determined yet.

The current CFO, Democrat Alex Sink, decided to jump into the governor's race this week. A handful of Democrats have been rumored to be looking at the seat, including state Sen. Dave Aronberg, D-Greenacres, if someone else -- a.k.a. current state senator and U.S. Senate candidate Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach -- shifts gears and runs for state attorney general.

Another scenerio a top Republican has added to the musical-chairs file: Marco Rubio could try to fill McCollum's current post as state Attorney General.

Several GOP associates are supposedly asking the West Miami lawyer and former state House speaker to at least consider shifting to that race, which would further deflate the chances that Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp could be a viable candidate for the job.
