FaceBook Broadens Definition of "Family"

NOTE: Thanks to the efforts of our colleagues at GLAAD and a small group of state and national LGBT organizations, the leadership at Facebook has agreed to include "Civil Union" and "Domestic Partnership" in its list of familial relationships. What may seem like a small thing has enormous potential to shift cultures in the directions of equality for all. While this initial expansion of the definition of family is limited to the 5 countries that have work hardest for it, Facebook has the potential to impact cultures across the globe with its 500,000,000+ members.

Following meetings with LGBT advocacy groups, Facebook on Thursday added options for civil unions and domestic partnerships to its list of relationships that users can pick to best describe their relationship status.

NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook on Thursday added civil unions and domestic partnerships to the list of relationships that its users can pick from to best describe their romantic status.
