Equality Florida Responds to SCOTUS Decision to Overturn Roe V. Wade

Equality Florida Responds to US Supreme Court Decision Overturning Roe V. Wade

WASHINGTON, DC -- This morning, the United States Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (JWHO) has overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, two foundational rulings that affirmed our Constitutional right to abortion and privacy. Twenty-six states are now poised to ban abortion after this decision, including 13 states with “trigger bans” on the book. Equality Florida issued the following statement:

This is a catastrophic decision that immediately imperils access to abortion across the country, as trigger bans go into effect and more are expected. Equality Florida has been a pro-choice organization since its founding because the rights to sexual autonomy and reproductive freedom are causes we all have in common. This dangerous ruling undermines nearly 50 years of our personal autonomy over our bodies and lives. We will continue to fight alongside our partners and allies to secure reproductive freedom and access to abortion for our communities.

Right wing extremists, in their quest for total control, will not stop with abortion. Justice Thomas’ concurring opinion called for reviews of rulings that ended the criminalization of homosexuality and ensured the right to marriage equality. The same logic that’s being used to control people’s bodies and medical decisions is at risk of being used to turn back the clock on LGBTQ equality. Our fight against extremism is more critical than ever.
