Legislators hold gay community town hall

October 27, 2013|By Anthony Man, Sun Sentinel

Two South Florida state legislators are holding a town hall meeting on issues that affect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community.

Appearing at the session are state Rep. Perry Thurston, a Broward Democrat whose district includes Wilton Manors, the unofficial gay capital of South Florida, and state Sen. Maria Sachs, a Democrat who represents mostly coastal Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Gay and lesbian voters are key Democratic-leaning voting bloc. The town hall is part of LGBT History month, according to Equality Florida, the state gay rights organization that announced the gathering.

Gay Marriage isn't legal in Florida, and it isn't on the agenda for the 2014 legislative session. Equality Florida said it would instead ask for legislation banning discrimination against gays and lesbians and establish a statewide domestic partnership registry.

The session is Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers, Wilton Manors City Hall, 2020 Wilton Drive.
