'Gay-Straight' student group prompts discussion about bullying in schools

When 14-year-old Bayli Silberstein, an eighth-grader heading the effort to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at Carver Middle School, applied to start her club she and fellow students hoped the group would help to combat bullying of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.

And while the group is on hold as rules about student clubs are finalized, the focus on bullying has prompted calls for extra programs, guidance counselors and revamping the anti-bullying rule. School Board Chairwoman Kyleen Fischer has advocated for more anti-bullying programs and last week called for extra guidance counselors in middle schools to implement them.
