Jones’s historic candidacy offers opportunity to elect Florida's first openly LGBTQ member of Congress

Miami, Fla. — Equality Florida Action, Inc. today announced its endorsement of State Senator Shevrin Jones in the Democratic primary for Florida's 24th Congressional District, calling his candidacy a historic opportunity to expand LGBTQ representation at the highest levels of government. If elected, Jones would become Florida's first openly LGBTQ member of Congress.

Jones is no stranger to making history. He is the state’s first openly LGBTQ state senator and the first openly LGBTQ Black member of the legislature. Earlier this year, he made history again by being tapped as Florida’s first openly LGBTQ Senate Democrat leader-elect. For his years of remarkable service, Jones has been recognized by Equality Florida with its Voice for Equality Award.

He entered the race following the retirement of longtime U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson. His deep roots in Congressional District 24 and longstanding relationships throughout the community set him apart in the Democratic primary. During his 16-year tenure as a state legislator, he has been a fearless advocate on criminal justice reform, LGBTQ rights, against anti-immigrant attacks like the unleashing of Alligator Alcatraz on the community, and for reproductive justice.
