President Trump Issues Slew Of Executive Actions Targeting Individual Rights & Freedoms, Especially For Transgender Americans
On his first day, President Trump issued a slew of executive actions targeting individual rights and freedomsâespecially for transgender Americans. While we anticipated these actions, they highlight the right-wing obsession with attacking the LGBTQ community, particularly transgender youth and adults.
These actions are part of a calculated strategy by extremist political operatives who chose to target transgender people as a new wedge issue after marriage equality became settled law. They knew that many people do not know someone who is transgender. Now theyâre exploiting it, making anti-transgender attacks their top priority.
President Trumpâs Anti-Transgender Executive Order is full of far-right fear-mongering and dog whistles. It stretches far beyond his constitutional authority, but it attempts to:
- Rollback protections guaranteed under the U.S. Supreme Courtâs Bostock ruling on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity;
- Undo directives from President Biden for safe and inclusive schools;
- Deny access to gender-affirming ID documents like passports and visas;
- End federal funding of âgender ideologyâ; and
- Enforce a strict gender binary, referring to anything else as a âfalse claimâ
By scapegoating the transgender community, leaders like Trump, DeSantis, and Republican allies aim to sow fear and division, distracting from their failure to address real issues that impact American familiesâlike affordable housing, accessible healthcare, and fair wages. Instead, they weaponize ignorance and exploit anxiety for political and financial gain.
In Florida, weâve been living under a MAGA supermajority for years, and weâve been fighting back against similar anti-LGBTQ policies and laws. Equality Florida understands how to resist, claw back important protections, and connect our community with vital resources. Weâre determined to share what weâve learned with partners nationwide who are now facing these attacks for the first time.
Weâre currently collaborating with legal experts and national partners to assess the full scope of these executive actions and their implications. Weâre tracking how federal agencies will implement these actions and will provide further updates as we have them.
