Moffitt Cancer Center Highlighted in Healthcare Equality Index 2012
Named as “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by national survey
TAMPA, Fla. (June 21, 2012) – Moffitt Cancer Center has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2012 report, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) organization. Moffitt earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face challenges in accessing adequate health care.
“This recognition speaks volumes to Moffitt’s commitment to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer for all, regardless of their race, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, culture or background. Cancer is colorblind, fluent in every language and can impact anyone,” said B. Lee Green, Ph.D., vice president of Moffitt Diversity, senior member of Health Outcomes and Behavior, and co-director of the Center for Equal Health.
In Florida, Moffitt is one of a select group of three hospitals/hospital systems comprising 11 health care facilities to be named as a Leader in Healthcare Equality. Nationally, Moffitt is one of two cancer centers to have received this designation. Facilities awarded this title meet several key indicators for equitable care, including nondiscrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff.
Moffitt’s employee network, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance at Moffitt (GLAAM), was instrumental in encouraging Moffitt’s leadership to complete the Healthcare Equality Index survey. They will also be involved in Moffitt’s commitment to provide LGBT patients and their families with exceptional cancer care.
“LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality. It makes a big difference to know that your local health care facility is fully committed to giving you the same care it gives your neighbors and co-workers,” said Ellen Kahn, director of the HRC Family Project.
