Stop Profiting from Homophobia

Media General - parent company of WFLA Ch 8, TBO.com and Tampa Tribune - has used their WFLA division as a platform to air an hour-long infomercial of hateful anti-gay propaganda on Pride Day this year.

While other stations across the country rejected the hour-long hateful infomercial, Media General/WFLA management made the business decision to profit from homophobia while ignoring their responsibility to provide honest, balanced information.

They have also refused to air a program that might balance out the lies and mitigate the insult of having aired the infomercial on Pride Day 2009, the 40th Anniversary of Stonewall.

Media General doesn't see anything wrong with taking $35,000 to broadcast homophobia. Please add your voice to the growing number of people urging Media General's advertisers to hold Media General- including WFLA, the Tampa Tribune and TBO.com- accountable for auctioning off the public airwaves to bigotry.

Here is the text of the message we'll deliver to advertisers on your behalf. Please also add a personal comment in the box provided to the left.

Dear President/CEO,

I want to alert you to the fact that Media General--with whom you advertise--has used their WFLA Channel 8 Division as a platform to air an hour-long infomercial of hateful anti-gay propaganda.

Other stations across the country rejected this infomercial dressed up to look like a legitimate news report, but WFLA/Media General decided bigotry was too profitable to pass up.

"Speechless" demonizes gay and transgender people, painting the LGBT community as a "threat" to children and society.

Please contact Media General- the parent company of WFLA Ch 8, the Tampa Tribune, and TBO Online- to let them know that your company does not want its brand, products or services associated with such hateful rhetoric.
