Pentagon: No gays were discharged in past month


According to the Pentagon, no U.S. service members have been discharged in the past month for being openly gay. This is thanks to new rules adopted by the Defense Department in October.

Prior to the rule change any officer with the rank equivalent to a one-star general could discharge gay soldiers under the 1993 "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Defense Secretary Robert Gates adopted new rules that puts that authority in the hands of only three service secretaries.
