Judge Darrin Gayles Praised as Overcoming ‘Racism and Homophobia’ to Win Federal Court Appointment

LGBT groups throughout Florida are praising the confirmation on Tuesday of Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Darrin P. Gayles to the federal court.

"He is a dedicated professional. Whip smart. He’s everything you’d want in a judge in terms of experience and temperament. I’m glad we’ve reached a day when the fact that he’s gay and the fact that’s he’s black are not reason to hold him back," said Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith, on behalf of the Florida Why Courts Matter coalition. "It’s a testament to his extraordinary qualifications and how far we've come as a society that racism and homophobia haven’t been used to try to hold him back."
