Do you know what you would you say if you got to shake hands with our President, our Vice President, the First Lady? It's a moment we play out in our minds, but when they are looking you in the eye it can be hard to think.
Fortunately for me, my husband did the talking last night, thanking them for their integrity, and for supporting our family, and then pointing me out to them as his Husband of 19 years. And watching their reactions, their smiles brightening, first Obama, and then Michelle, as they reached through the crowd to shake my hand, their expressions warmly acknowledging our family, I knew our world has changed.
And before I could think to say more than "thank you," they had moved on. But I recovered in time to greet Vice President Biden and as I shook his hand and said, "Thank you for being out front on marriage equality."
And he flashed back that famous broad grin and said, "It's the civil rights issue of my day. I won't stand by."
We are privileged to live in this amazing time, and full equality is coming.
