Yesterday was the first day during which domestic partners could register in the City of Sarasota. The process went smoothly, but they only registered 9 couples. That could well be because yesterday was election day and there was a strong rain storm in the morning.
The slowness could also have been due to the fact that the opening date of registration was moved up from Dec 4th which was the original planned first date for registration. And because of the change, some people may not be aware of that change.
So, if you have friends you know or believe would be interested in registering who haven't done so, please let them know they can register Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout November between 9AM and noon and 1 PM to 4 PM.
The registration process is currently staffed with volunteers who are enthusiastically waiting for hordes of people to come and show their community spirit. Both residents and non-residents are eligible to register, but the rights conferred by the ordinance apply within the city's jurisdiction. So if you use medical facilities, schools, funeral homes, or jails within the city you will be interested in registering.
